Up on Y Garn

There's been a tiny bit of snow upon the mountains over the last couple of days. With so much time spent at indoor climbing walls over the last couple of weeks it's felt like a while since I gave my legs a good hike. There looked to be a few dry daylight hours, so we set off up our local peak to see if any 'winter' remained.

We took the minus east ridge scramble to get up onto the tops, in a more 'interesting' way, then followed the rim of the cwm up to the summit of Y Garn.

The last few steps put us onto the snowline, although the freezing level was way up above the summits.

Not much of a summit view, but while we sat and had a drink (and I'd put the camera away), there were some actually quite good views and almost a brief blast of sunshine!

We practised a few techniques on the little snow that there was as we descended from the summit.

Once back on the path, we watched the huge lumbering bulk of a Hurcules Plane fly past way below us. (you might have to zoom in!).

Then an easy walk back to the car and a few minutes later, the sanctuary of The Cottage. And if anyone was still wondering about the winter climbing conditions in the Ogwen Valley - this is the view of Cwm Ceniefion...
