Scrambling in Cwm Idwal

Back up into Cwm Idwal for the first time in a month or so, for an introduction to scrambling with a small group of 6th form students. Luck was on our side with the weather and although it wasn't warm, it was pleasantly dry, with good views of the surrounding mountains as we hiked up. While I was briefing the group a man came over to ask how to get to a point on google maps on his phone. 'Where exactly' I asked? He was very definite that he wanted to go to exactly where the google pin was showing. I explained that the pin was located in the centre of Llyn Idwal and he'd have to swim to get there, but I could show him where the path led to the lake shore. Having agreed on the best way to get to the lake, he returned seconds later asking how he was supposed to drive his car up the rough footpath as no one wanted to get out of the vehicle as it was too cold!?.. I suggested he stay on the road and carry on to a different lake!...  Bonkers.... We set off on foot chuckling...

There was a light dusting of snow up high and ice above 800m. Clare and Dave were over on this peak - Y Garn.

Our objective was the steep group to the side of Idwal Slabs, which we ascended and descended, while learning various different techniques to safeguard each other.

The view felt like seeing an old friend, as I'd not been up here in what has felt like ages.

On getting back to The Cottage, we've battened down the hatches as the weather charts are suggesting that we might be in for a windy few days!!
