All things considered, it wasn't optimum conditions for an ascent of Wales' highest peak.
The thought of sub zero wind chill temperatures and getting struck by lightning was enough to make even the keenest members of my group re-consider the plan for the day. Up at Pen y Pass, having pre-paid the cheapest parking fee of £18, we set off up the PyG track. (although £18 is a lot of money to spend on parking for 8 hours, on the upside, it was nice to arrive knowing that we would actually be able to park).
The weather was never quite as bad as the forecast predicted, but we stuck with our new plan of walking up to the standing stone where the two paths meet and then descending down to the Glaslyn Lake for lunch, then returning along the Miners track.
Pulses of rain blew through, strong gusts knocked us about a bit and every now and then, the sun shone.
As we arrived back at the bus a little earlier than if we'd gone for the summit, we also realised that ther was time to check out the waterfall in Llanberis and even squeeze in time for a well earned hot chocolate - which considering we'd hiked just under 10km, we decided we all deserved! The pause in the rain showers lasted just long enough to be able to sit outside while we did.
