Wow! Has there been some surf arriving in Ireland today! It took us a while to find some that we could actually surf, but we've seen some awe-inspiring, beautiful waves reach the shore during our quest. Having checked the local beach, we discovered that the wind direction had changed, so we now need to find a south coast beach. The map suggested that Kinnard Beach might be good. It was unbelievebly good - a bit too good in fact. Big waves were arriving in massive sets, which would have given some sensational rides could we get out to them (and not get pounded onto the rocks in the process). We spent quite a long time watching them before moving on.
The next option was nice and sheltered, had a castle on the shore, a big rock bay, but no waves...
There were a few surfers at Inch Reef, but they weren't getting much, so we carried on to the main beach.
Here, there were lines of corduroy as far as the horizon. They looked a more amenable size and were also breaking on a sandy beach. Excitedly, we got into our wetsuits and spent the afternoon riding waves. Clare was picking up every single one it seemed, while I took a while to find the best 'take off' spot. Once I did I got some amazingly long rides.
Out of curiosity, we returned to Kinnard Beach on the way home to see if there were still waves on the low tide. There sure was, along with a couple of friendly surfers. We got the rug out on the cliff top and were happy to watch while brewing a coffee. It was brilliant to see and even though it was tempting to get back in, I knew my arms were too tired, so settled back in a therma-rest chair and watched natures display of power.
You can just see a surfer catching this wave to give you a sense of scale.
Eventually we started getting hungry, so set off back to camp, via a quick stop in Dingle for supplies.
