We had a holiday from home today! Thanks to a new edition of one of the local climbing guidebooks, we were able to go climbing on a completely new cliff today. Well, the cliff is obviously pretty old, but I'd never even heard of it before, let alone been climbing on it. It was developed for climbing just over a year ago. We went to check it out.
At nearly 30m high, it's quite a big feature to have remained hidden until now! It's an old quarried face, so made up of bands of rock. It was much more solid than it looked although the final few moves were a bit scrappy. Lots of crimps all the way up, which were all reassuringly positive to hold. Given that it was wet all day at The Cottage, we were delighted to be out climbing in the dry and even more so with a new cliff and view. We did one of the 6 climbs that have been put up, just before the rain made it around mid afternoon.
On the way to the climbing we stopped off at Rhos as the weather charts looked like there might be some surf. We arrived at 9am and although the waves weren't great, they were enough to catch a few fun rides. After about an hour, the waves died off as the tide pushed in, so we got out and warmed up. It had been worth getting up for.
Rather than head straight off, we took a walk along the promenade and beach area. The sun felt warm and it was like we'd been transported to a different place as behind us in the mountains, we could see the towering black clouds above the hills. We made our way along the high tide line where all sorts of debris had been washed up. This guy made us chuckle before we headed off to find the new crag.
