By Bike Through Rennes

The temperature is rising! We were both up while the morning was still cool, so that we could get some distance in while the trail was quiet and the temperatures low. We followed the River Rance to the regions capital city, Rennes, but first stopped off to enjoy the views at Betton. We got some food here for later and enjoyed a riverside crepe before moving on.

Rennes is a very bike friendly city.

All across the city centre, there are proper dedicated bike roads, not just a white line on the side of the main road. At junctions, priority is given to cyclists and there were even traffic lights just for bikes.

We soon found ourselves in the city centre. We detoured from the official bike route to make sure we saw a few of the city sights. There are some beautiful buildings; the only snag was riding the cobbled streets!

We sat on the cool shady steps of the Opera House and enjoyed a pain au chocolate while watching the world go by.

There were lots of cafes and shops, but we decided to give them all a miss this time and keep ourselves to ourselves.

After checking out the palace, we passed through a grim industrial zone, after which the river regained its charm. Under a shady oak, we stopped for a late lunch refuel. Clare’s handlebar bar bag is like a tardis and can even accommodate half a baguette!

During the afternoon’s ride we saw a few Herons and most excitingly, some Kingfishers too. They move fast! This was the only photo I managed to get of the wildlife.

The final section to camp was a killer. The landscape opened up, which I enjoyed more that being hemmed in by the trees, but the sun beat down relentlessly without a breath of breeze.

Thankfully, we can across a small fishing lake, with shaded areas to fish from. We found a vacant one and enjoyed an hours cooling rest while letting the kingfisher be in charge of any fishing duties.

Finally, the last few kilometres clicked by and the campsite had both space for us, as well as essential shade. It had been a bit longer and much hotter than anticipated today.

Day 2: 63.6km (13m of ascent!!)
