I was scheduled to be taking some students on a Gorge Walk today, but given that we had another 33mm of rain overnight, I decided that such an activity might be a bit spicier than required. On the way to 'Plan B', we found that the Conwy River had burst it's banks and the bridge we need to take was partly submerged. 'Plan C' also had to be curtailed when the footpath across the fields near Betws y Coed was also about a meter under water!
From the safety of a higher path, we followed the Llugwy to check out 'Swallow Falls', which were impressive and noisy! Below, the (not insignificant) Miners Bridge (which usually crosses the river in photo below) had been completely washed away!
We found it someway downstream, where it had been winched up into the bank. Given that it's made of steel girders, it must have been some force of water to move it
We continued on higher ground through the forest...
From the bridge in Betws, the Pont y Pair falls were almost washed out.
Back at base, it turned into a pretty late night as John, Ben and I continued to make progress on the new equipment stores.
It was worth the effort though and we're suitably proud of our new walking boot rack - Good team effort!
