We had a little visitor in camp this evening. Don’t often see these guys at home, but he’s the third we’ve come across in Sweden.
We’ve had our longest (possibly ever) day of cycling, which has been brilliant, but our luck almost ran out when it came to finding somewhere to camp. As our energy began to wain, we searched along the coast past fields and old windmills...
And new windmills...
But were eventually rewarded with a pitch in the back garden of the Caravan Club holiday park. It’s a perfect little shady area amongst the apple trees and secluded from the rest of the site by a thick hedge. And best of all, we’ve had our first hot shower of the tour, followed by ice cold drinks on a private terrace...
Where they also serve pizza! An hour before this photo was taken, we were considering sleeping down by a hedge on the edge of a nature reserve. You can’t camp in the reserves, so it felt like our plan had suddenly been thwarted. Thankfully, it all worked out and we found this place.
Looking back to this morning seems like an age ago. We were really quite reluctant to leave our idyllic camp having woken up feeling fully rested and feeling like a million dollars.
The first section of the trail was right along the sea shore. A little bumpy, but beautiful.
A short section away from the coast took us past Sweden’s oldest windmill...
Before arriving back by the sea for a break. A swim here would have been great, but there was a sign up saying that there was a problem with water quality in the bay. It was super hot but neither of us fancied getting ill.
Further up the coast, the trail took us to the waters edge again, where a pre-lunch swim was much more enticing. The sea is so shallow along this coast that it’s nice a warm, but takes a while to be deep enough to swim in!
Being submerged was so refreshing it felt essential. We both felt energised afterwards.
We arrived at Falkenberg mid-afternoon and took rest on the cool surface of some shaded stone seats in the town square. It was a well needed rest, but we still had to make it out of town in order to find somewhere less built up to camp.
The first part of the coast was too industrial and the second, we soon found out was a nature reserve. We tired various lanes and wooded areas, but eventually had to conceded defeat and returned south for a short distance to where we’d seen the Caravan Site. We had no idea just how nice it would be and at any rate, we were both keen for a shower. We left the light house in the reserve feeling justifiably tired where we saw how far we’d peddled ourselves during such a hot day.
Total Ride: 76km (our biggest ever perhaps?)
284m of ascent
