The Anglesey Circumnavigation Project - Menai Bridge to Caernarfon

Although I've kayaked a great deal around the coast of Anglesey, I've never done a full circumnavigation of the island. My friend Pete has been keen to do the whole thing for a while now and today we made a start on making it happen. Given that Pete is still recovering from a series of unbelievable injuries, illnesses and generally life-altering circumstances, we weren't about to set off in a single push. Instead, we've broken the trip down into sections that can each be enjoyed in their own right, while connecting up the entire coastline.

With the help of kayaking supremo, Olly, we set off from Menai Bridge in perfect conditions. It had been at least five years since Pete had been in a sea kayak, so we did a few warm-ups by the slipway, before setting off into the flow and flying through the Swellies, then Britannia Bridge with the speed of the tide. (remember that Canoe trip Mum & Dad!)

We stopped for lunch near Plas Newydd to eat and stretch our legs. We had planned on going as far as Y Felinheli, but we'd been going so fast that we decided we could press on a bit further to Plas Menai.

At Plas Menai, Caernafon was now only another four kilometers away, so we pushed onwards into the wind. The wind against tide effect gave us some choppy waters, but soon we had our goal in sight.

We finished by landing right outside the Castle, delighted to have our first 15km of the circumnavigation completed!
