The Mawddach Mini-Expedition

Had a brilliant 'mini-expedition' with some young students this weekend, hiking the trail along the Mawddach Estuary in Mid-Wales. We set off from Dolgellau in the rain, but spirits were high in the group (and I'd remembered to take the mini umbrella that we'd bought in Hawaii!). At the toll bridge at Penmean Pool, we met a Warden from the Snowdonia Nation Park.

He had converted the old railway signal box into a biology/wildlife museum. He talked us through all the animals that we might see during our trek and had all sorts of wacky specimens.

After giving us some otter poo to sniff, he then produced a frozen otter from a chest freezer for us to study! (the victim of a recent hit and run). And a grass snake! (of unknown origin)!

Super interesting and a great set up for the 'Mawddach Bingo' spotting cards that we had with us. Arriving later than evening at the YHA, we spent a comfy night in the Kings Youth Hostel, where we managed a productive review before bed that focused on positivity.

Sunday saw us heading to Barmouth, by continuing along the river.

We saw a few Herons, Geese, Egrets and plenty of Oyster Catchers and quite a few animal tracks too.

Mid-afternoon saw us arrive in the seaside town of Barmouth, tired and triumphant. A great journey.
