The Big Freeze - Local Sights

Finally succumbed to the effects of crossing both the Pacific and Atlantic in a weekend! Rest has been required. The weather has remained ferocious and we have remained tired, so we spent a local day, enjoying some short walks from The Cottage. Down in the relative shelter of the valley, we kept warm while checking out some of the nearby natural phenomena associated with this cold snap and storm. First stop was the Ogwen River, which in places was completely frozen across with ice so thick that a stone couldn't crack it.

Ogwen Bank falls looked a little different to normal and the paths were littered with broken branches that had been brought down by the gales.

We have not had much in the way of lying snow (it all got blown away!), but the winds last night were some of the strongest we've had. On the other side of the river, three big beech trees had been uprooted in the night.

In places, the river was turning to slush!

We had a quick explore up the Caseag Gorge to see it the waterfalls had frozen, They were quite spectacular, but not frozen enough to ice climb on.

Closer to the Cottage, the small reservoir dam was also beginning to freeze!

And most amazingly of all was later in the day, when a friend sent this photo of Aberfalls, on the northern edge of Snowdonia! Spot the climbers on the right-hand side!
