Cycle Touring Anglesey - Malltraeth to Llyn Cefni

We've been wanting to cycle the cycle trail across the centre of Anglesey for a while now and today (despite being pretty cold), seemed like a good day to go for it. After a morning of sorting a few jobs, we arrived at Malltreath and set off, into a bracing wind, along the canal. The whole path had been flooded last week and there was a lot of debris and the adjoining fields were still full of standing water.

Despite it not being that far away, I'd never really been to the centre of Llangefni (apart from one memorable April Fool's day four years ago). It's a pretty funky little place. We found some winter sunshine to rest in, by the clock tower.

As we still had time on our side, we carried on through the town, past the church...

...through the Dingle Woods and up to the dam of Llyn Cefni.

The views were great. I had had no idea, until this morning, that there was even a lake there! It's amazing where a little journey on a bike can take you. As long as we had our backs to the wind, the sun felt warm on our faces.

We reversed the route back to the van, which had the advantage of riding into a spectacular sunset and having a bit of wind assistance too. We made a brief stop in the town to purchase a delicious hot sausage bap, to fuel our return. On parts of the ride on the edge of Llangefni, by the river, the flood debris was all in the trees - above head height! Incredible!

The trail passes under the A55 before reaching the coast.

The sun was low, but it was a car-free trail, so we had no worries about not having lights on our bikes.

Over to the south, the clouds were glowing pink above the snow-capped mountains.

Having picked up some pastries in Llangefni, we finished the tour by eating them, sat on a bench watching the light show. Just after we sat down, a huge murmuration of  Lapwings swirled around us. Breathtaking stuff.

Great to be back on the bike...
