Leaving Lolloland

Another fine day on the tour of Denmark! Great riding, a few bits of sight seeing and a mega burger lunch. -  We set off from Maribo Campsite via the lakeside cathedral.

We stopped briefly in the town to pick up a few bits of food for lunch and have a quick look around the main square.

At Sakskøbing, we stopped for a snack. Moments after perching ourselves on a bench, it began to rain, so we took shelter under some trees as the rain passed over.

After about ten minutes it had stopped raining, so we set off again eastwards towards our next island - Falster.

We passed through a few small towns but were mostly out in the countryside and enjoyed a very grand section that went though an estate.

There was a big chateau type building and a field full of raindeer.

The road gradually dried up and we sped onwards, encountering virtually no other traffic.

It was just past lunchtime when we crossed the bridge over to Nykøbing Falster. Instead of following the cycle route around the edge of town, we turned of and followed signs to the centre. It had been a long morning with frequent rain showers and the wind had not always been with us. The gamble paid off as we pulled into a lovely, bustling town square.

We parked the bike up outside of a cool looking cafe called 'The Burger' and instinctively knew we'd found our perfect lunch spot.  Inside and out of the wind, it was warm, comfortable and very welcoming to two tired cyclists. There was a lunchtime special menu on offer, which turned out to be considerably bigger than we expected! We polished off the lot without trouble and washed it down with local rhubarb juice.

About an hour and a half later, we left feeling rejuvenated and ready to ride.

The cycle route took us straight across the island to the beaches on the east coast. At the tourist area of Marielyst Beach, we suddenly found ourselves aimid other people and plenty of bucket and spade type shops. Down at the beach though, it was lovely.

A sudden and sharp shower cleared the beach in minutes as everyone ran for cover. But by the time we had jackets on, it had virtually passed us by, so we carried on past more thatched cottages and idyllic country scenes.

Further north at Ulslev Beach, we decided to camp for the night. Clare suggested getting the tent up, then having a quick swim (more of a dive in and dash out to be honest), before hot showers. The photo makes it look a lot warmer than it was!

It had been another big day, but it had been a memorable one!

Total Ride: 58km
