What better way to escape the bank holiday crowds than to paddle a kayak down the Menai Straits! There was an overcast start to the day, but with the promise of sunshine on the way. We'd not been out in the boats in ages, so there was a certain amount of 'dusting off' required as well as re-homing a few spiders. It was worth the effort though, as the day turned into a real stunner!
We got on at the slipway in Menai Bridge and paddled East towards Bangor Pier.
We hugged the island shoreline and had some good bird spotting; Osyter Catchers, Egrits, Herons, Cormerants, Turns, Guls and Curlews to name but a few.
The other bit of spotting that we did was 'house spotting'! The banks of the straits are home to some incredible homes! They come in all shapes and sizes and even the less glamorous ones must have fantastic views! Some were glass fronted, some had landscaped gardens and some were literally overhanging the water (with a hot tub on the roof!), there really are some fabulous places. I'm not sure which was my favourite, but this place had the best architect, and for us, holds the best memories!
After returning on the tide to Menai Bridge, we tried and failed to get a coffee, but did find a cool looking new restaurant called the 'Hydeout' and then a sunny seat with a view of the water.
On the way home we called in at Y Felinheli to catch the last of the sun before returning back to base.
